One Final Blog
When I starting thinking of my topic for the blog to write about for eight weeks, it was challenging. I thought about my kids, experiences in the past growing up, many things that would make me last. Wood splitting which comes to me natural, because I grew up around it, was the perfect topic to write on. Although I did not know what I was getting into for a whole semester.
The hardest part was to get other classmates to understand what my concept was behind logging. Many New Yorkers think that logging is something which people use to hook a chain up to a log and pull it out of the woods. My whole mindset behind this topic was for better understanding for what you could do with the logs. The main idea was cutting up the logs into chunks and then splitting them for firewood. Talking about many other things that could be done with logs like, building log cabins or cutting into lumber to build houses was for another time.
There is many things that are involved with firewood, so I considered it to be the perfect subject to discuss for this course. Some things that were hard, because blogging is new to me was simple stuff like adding pictures, unless my computer is different, signing on at times on my home computer, and most of all typing it so classmates would know how to do this if the day should arise. Wanting to keep it simple enough and not to the point of confusion, was my whole objective. Other than what I am trying to say now, it was an new experience which will go in the “tool box“, or keep in mind for the future. Also while taking this course, it was brought to my attention that my brother has a blog site which surprised me. I went to the site and found more pictures than anything, so it did not help any on my part. Great information I learned through my brother’s/classmate blogs.
Logging
The logging industry is very important in society today; not just for lumber and building houses but for firewood as well.

Accomplishment

Accomplishment
According to Webster’s dictionary, accomplishment is defined as the successful completion or achievement of a given goal. When first starting out in the spring time, getting ready for the winter is a crucial time. It is like these blogs we are writing; you start working on the paved road and doing great, but before you know it; the pavement is gone and the road starts to get bumpier and bumpier. Trying to fit the how’s and why’s are hard enough, but I personally did not think that I would have gotten this far if it was not for the sense of accomplishment.
The feeling of accomplishment is great. Just like setting goals to finish all the procedures with firewood needed so a family can be warm at night. Having finished a few minutes faster than you have before with the same job that you have done over and over again feels great. An individual which comes up and says, “hey great job today” feels great. Which this same individual you have disliked for a while now and feeling bad.
Knowing if something gets changed and you had a part of that, it makes you feel good. For example, a stack of wood is leaning to one side and you change it up with placing supports on that side. Many different ways which to carry wood and coming up with the fastest method possible to get chunks of wood from point A to point B. Splitting certain wood a certain way can speed up the process to feel the sense of accomplishment. These are just some facts to which a sense of accomplishment arises.

Time Management

Time Management
This is a way to get multiple things accomplished at once. First, I know many people work hard during the week and cannot wait till the weekend. A good way to spend with the family. If you think about this for a second, firewood is process and all ages can be involved. I know kids, especially little ones love to play with sticks if they can get a hold of them. So why not give them a task and let the pile of sticks build up in a certain location set by you. It will keep them occupied for some time and is fun.
Teenagers get to the point when they would like to explore things. I wanted to start using the equipment my dad used when I was in my early teens. A motorized chainsaw that could slice through wood like butter is what I wanted to use. The safety issues that involved using this type of machinery compared to an ax was very dangerous. There are safety courses which can be taken. Usually in every location with this type of work. If not, I have heard of people traveling to assist or teach people the basic fundamentals on safety and operations dealing with firewood.
Adults on the other hand, is our mentors. We all strive to have a mentor to follow. Learning is knowledge and knowledge is the key to success, someone once told me some time ago. Parents try and teach their kids from right or wrong. This is a good way to do something as a family. Spend that quality time needed from the many hours at work put in during the week. A way to get some exercise with the family as well and enjoy the warmth at winter time. It is what you make of it for that short time to have it be all worth it. If living in a small community, everyone can participate and help each other out. One hand washes the other.

Woodmen's Competition
Woodmen’s Competition
All the work which is done to satisfy an individuals intent, is not for nothing. Something that many people do while at work is find a way to make it better. A little competition among each other is a good way to pass the time. Founded in 1948 by Rev. Frank Reed attended this nonprofit organization to be days where the best skills of men and women come forth. It is a three day event held usually in August and located in Boonville, New York. Over the years, individuals all the way from Australia and New Zealand travel to compete in the competition. Now the competition goes throughout the United States and well known. An article last updated 12/12/2006 by Star Info. 1995-2005 New York State Woodmen’s Field Days Inc. Received on 24/04/2007 The competition is a series of events which only qualified personnel can compete in. They have both men and women separate events as well as together.
This is just a portion of what you can find out, by actually going to the sight and searching the links. A few sources which I plan on using for my analysis paper is more in depth with woodmen’s field days and the different things which could be done with wood. Checking out comments from other people to websites regarding to the overall theme of logging. I plan on calling and trying to receive information from the websites I have been on. I have some friends back home that either work or knows someone that works in this type of industry. I would just like to add some depth to what I have discussed within the blog.

What about Wood
What about Wood
Wood itself has many different varieties. It is not only used for firewood, but for a number of different things. Some things that you can use wood for other than firewood is a BBQ, Cooking, Birch Logs, Kindling, and Natural Lump Charcoal. Also what I am going to discuss later is a little bit of competitiveness against men and women with all different kinds of skills. The fact from people that I have talked to that some wood is just better to use for something else other than burning. Bass wood according to my dad and The Safest, Easiest, and Quietest. Received on 24/04/2007 suggests that it is hard to burn and smokes a lot, so should be used to make paper instead. It is easy to split though, just takes that much longer to dry out.
At a BBQ, you probably would not think that it would matter what type and size of wood to burn. According to J.N. Firewood, it is recommended that a two through four and a half inches around for burning at a BBQ. Birch Logs have a type of bark that has a certain look which most people appeal too. So for a peaceful night with a fire, some people use Birch Logs, which are bigger than BBQ chunks. Kindling wood or wood chips are used to start fires quickly. The kindling is usually sliced or shaven bark to make an easy way to start a fire. The charcoal is hardwood and can burn for a long time.

Bringing into The Home

Bringing into The Home
If there is no time to build a wood shed or just do not have the ambition, than other options are available. Simple stacking the wood on a porch if have one or close to the house. Placing post into the ground to stabalize the wood from falling over is recommended. A tarp or some type of plastic canvas can be used to cover the stacked wood. Now it is recommended that wood that goes in the house not be more than one to two week's worth by CW. Wood sheds, wood boxes and managing the mess. Last updated on 28/02/2007 Replaced wood-heat.com. Received on 10/04/2007
There are different types of wood storage compartments within the house. When building a home and knowing that wood is going to be used to heat it, it would be good to figure out a plan to build a storage compartment for wood. Afterwards can be an option, but why not take care of two things at once! Some racks can be used to hold the wood, but just have to make sure that it is maintaining consistent amount of wood. If you have the luxury to have an elevator from the basement to the woodstove or location of fireplace is better equipped for transportation wise.
Managing the mess is very important. Wood chips and bark can fall throughout the house while transportation. If constant cleaning during the time when wood is being used, it will prevent bugs and other type of parasites roaming free. The loss of bark while going through the splitting process lowers the heat consumption and bugs do not want to hang out regardless, but it is possible. There is tough canvas bags out there to transport wood so woodchips and scuffing up your arms and clothes are saved. They are cost effective at that and only range between ten to thirty dollars depending on the size. The proper set of tools used to clean and take care of the mess can save much hassle. I rather spend a little more on tools to make my job easy to make it harder in the long run.

Wood Sheds

Wood Sheds
A changing of the weather is a sign that something needs to be done with the wood. One location an individual can move the dried split wood to is under a wood shed. The wood shed would be used for shelter from the winter months preventing it to get wet again. Also more ventilation to dry and access to bring chunks in to the house and burn in the wood stove. Now a wood shed can be as expensive as you want it to be.
The one type of shed I would like to discuss is less than ten dollars worth of material and time consuming. Using different materials around the property and recyclables can save in the cost. A roof is an option to put on a wood shed, but highly recommended. Simply using a roof from an old junk car could help with money, if that is what a person wants to use on top. It should be built in the spring time prior to the wood being cut.
Adding to the wood shed can be an option when the extra money or materials are provided. A key not is to make sure that the size of the wood shed is big enough to hold about a year's worth of wood. Another way is to build it in a way to hold an even amount. If a cord last on average a couple of months, than maybe it would be to the best interest to have a building holding a couple of cord. It is best to have more than not enough wood. Just think there is wood for the next year already started. Depending how much you keep in the home is very important as well.
