The logging industry is very important in society today; not just for lumber and building houses but for firewood as well.

Woodmen's Competition

Woodmen’s Competition
All the work which is done to satisfy an individuals intent, is not for nothing. Something that many people do while at work is find a way to make it better. A little competition among each other is a good way to pass the time. Founded in 1948 by Rev. Frank Reed attended this nonprofit organization to be days where the best skills of men and women come forth. It is a three day event held usually in August and located in Boonville, New York. Over the years, individuals all the way from Australia and New Zealand travel to compete in the competition. Now the competition goes throughout the United States and well known. An article last updated 12/12/2006 by Star Info. 1995-2005 New York State Woodmen’s Field Days Inc. Received on 24/04/2007 The competition is a series of events which only qualified personnel can compete in. They have both men and women separate events as well as together.
This is just a portion of what you can find out, by actually going to the sight and searching the links. A few sources which I plan on using for my analysis paper is more in depth with woodmen’s field days and the different things which could be done with wood. Checking out comments from other people to websites regarding to the overall theme of logging. I plan on calling and trying to receive information from the websites I have been on. I have some friends back home that either work or knows someone that works in this type of industry. I would just like to add some depth to what I have discussed within the blog.

What about Wood

What about Wood
Wood itself has many different varieties. It is not only used for firewood, but for a number of different things. Some things that you can use wood for other than firewood is a BBQ, Cooking, Birch Logs, Kindling, and Natural Lump Charcoal. Also what I am going to discuss later is a little bit of competitiveness against men and women with all different kinds of skills. The fact from people that I have talked to that some wood is just better to use for something else other than burning. Bass wood according to my dad and The Safest, Easiest, and Quietest. Received on 24/04/2007 suggests that it is hard to burn and smokes a lot, so should be used to make paper instead. It is easy to split though, just takes that much longer to dry out.
At a BBQ, you probably would not think that it would matter what type and size of wood to burn. According to J.N. Firewood, it is recommended that a two through four and a half inches around for burning at a BBQ. Birch Logs have a type of bark that has a certain look which most people appeal too. So for a peaceful night with a fire, some people use Birch Logs, which are bigger than BBQ chunks. Kindling wood or wood chips are used to start fires quickly. The kindling is usually sliced or shaven bark to make an easy way to start a fire. The charcoal is hardwood and can burn for a long time.

Bringing into The Home

Bringing into The Home
If there is no time to build a wood shed or just do not have the ambition, than other options are available. Simple stacking the wood on a porch if have one or close to the house. Placing post into the ground to stabalize the wood from falling over is recommended. A tarp or some type of plastic canvas can be used to cover the stacked wood. Now it is recommended that wood that goes in the house not be more than one to two week's worth by CW. Wood sheds, wood boxes and managing the mess. Last updated on 28/02/2007 Replaced wood-heat.com. Received on 10/04/2007
There are different types of wood storage compartments within the house. When building a home and knowing that wood is going to be used to heat it, it would be good to figure out a plan to build a storage compartment for wood. Afterwards can be an option, but why not take care of two things at once! Some racks can be used to hold the wood, but just have to make sure that it is maintaining consistent amount of wood. If you have the luxury to have an elevator from the basement to the woodstove or location of fireplace is better equipped for transportation wise.
Managing the mess is very important. Wood chips and bark can fall throughout the house while transportation. If constant cleaning during the time when wood is being used, it will prevent bugs and other type of parasites roaming free. The loss of bark while going through the splitting process lowers the heat consumption and bugs do not want to hang out regardless, but it is possible. There is tough canvas bags out there to transport wood so woodchips and scuffing up your arms and clothes are saved. They are cost effective at that and only range between ten to thirty dollars depending on the size. The proper set of tools used to clean and take care of the mess can save much hassle. I rather spend a little more on tools to make my job easy to make it harder in the long run.

Wood Sheds

Wood Sheds
A changing of the weather is a sign that something needs to be done with the wood. One location an individual can move the dried split wood to is under a wood shed. The wood shed would be used for shelter from the winter months preventing it to get wet again. Also more ventilation to dry and access to bring chunks in to the house and burn in the wood stove. Now a wood shed can be as expensive as you want it to be.
The one type of shed I would like to discuss is less than ten dollars worth of material and time consuming. Using different materials around the property and recyclables can save in the cost. A roof is an option to put on a wood shed, but highly recommended. Simply using a roof from an old junk car could help with money, if that is what a person wants to use on top. It should be built in the spring time prior to the wood being cut.
Adding to the wood shed can be an option when the extra money or materials are provided. A key not is to make sure that the size of the wood shed is big enough to hold about a year's worth of wood. Another way is to build it in a way to hold an even amount. If a cord last on average a couple of months, than maybe it would be to the best interest to have a building holding a couple of cord. It is best to have more than not enough wood. Just think there is wood for the next year already started. Depending how much you keep in the home is very important as well.

Stacking Firewood

Stacking Firewood
The time spent splitting the wood is hard enough, but it then needs to be stacked. Just like I discussed before with giving the wood time to dry, well this is the time it starts. Once split to the designated size for the fireplace, it is time for nature to do its job. Utilizing the sun and wind within the summer months is the best time for the drying process. It really does not matter as long as the wood is receiving sunlight and wind.
How would a person start stacking firewood? Well there are many different ways in doing this. A way is determining by cords, or an official measurement of firewood. Now a full cord is a large amount of wood. It is four feet wide by eight feet long and as the volume of one hundred and twenty eight cubic feet. A face cord is similar but a lot less wood. It is the width of the actual firewood, four feet high and eight feet long. On an average, the width is around sixteen inches. Three of these face cords equal on full cord. A full size pickup, eight feet long bed is half a full cord. The compact size pickup or six foot bed is equal to only a quarter of a full cord.
Most importantly, a stack needs to be straight to be stable from the ground up. The ends of a cord should have some sticks or be crisscrossing like a fort. These also make the foundation of where the support comes from. If the materials are available, then take more sticks and place at a slant on the outside portion of the cord to stabilize even more. Once completed and depending on what type of wood, let nature take its course and dry the firewood out even more than it should be prior to splitting.

Equipment/Splitting the Wood

Equipment/Splitting the Wood

After the preparation stage and finding a destination, it is time to start splitting the wood. Equipment is needed to do this and there are various types. The ax is one of my personal favorites. An ax is a long wooden handle and a metal head with a blade usually on only one side. It is proficient if used properly on many kinds of wood.
Some types of wood require a wedge to split through them. Elm, maple, beech, and oak are some types of wood that is hard to split. They take more time to dry than other kinds of wood. Ash is one of the best types of wood to split. It dries easy and has pretty straight grains. The grains are the fibers that form the wood together, like the veins that blood flows through the human body.
A maul is a more advanced tool compared to an ax. The difference is that a maul is heavier and with a more abrupt slope. This decreases the opportunity for the wedge to stick in the wood. It increases the pressure that an individual can use while splitting a chunk of wood. A dull wedge is better to split with than a sharpened wedge, because the sharp one tends to want to stick in the wood. If just starting to split wood, it is recommended to use the sharp one. Also taking a safety class for cutting and splitting wood is encouraged. As there are many different techniques.

Destination

Destination
A location is needed to place all this wood. I did not mention before, but people need to receive the wood from someplace. If an individual purchases it, people bring the wood to their place or they simply cut it down on their own. The downfall with purchasing is receiving a good deal. There are so many people getting away with not giving customers what they want, it is going out of style. I remember a time when my dad had to purchase some wood in the winter and the wood received was not good. It did not burn right, a big sign of wetness, and smoked alot. One example of why not to take another person’s word that you hardly even know into consideration.
A good idea is to find a location that has much wind and can receive as much sunlight as possible. The process is just for the summer months, because by the time fall comes around, that is when you want to start placing the wood into a shed or cellar underneath a house. Now where a family has there fireplace or woodstove is very important. I know that I would not want to walk a great distance to get the firewood. It is good to have a small collection close by if that shed is a distance away. Just like taking care of a pet though, I remember just about everyday checking and making sure the supply was good.
There are instruments that people can use to determine if the location is right. A wood moisture meter, which you place in the middle of a stacked wood pile and determine the moisture. An ideal moisture is anywhere between fifteen and twenty percent. The Fuel is the Thing is where this information appears. Without the moisture the wood will not dry properly. So without the proper location of going through the process of making firewood that works well for you, it could be a bad winter for the family.

Preparation

Preparation
The procedure to make firewood is as easy as you want it to be. Today are most of my thoughts and experiences with the first step to making firewood. Firewood is trees broken down into chunks of wood and placed into a fireplace to keep a family warm at times of need. Now there are steps that need to be taken before the final placing the chunk in the fireplace. The steps that I used growing up were; destination, equipment, splitting, stacking, drying, moving, and finally to burn the wood.
First step in preparing firewood is determined how much is going to be needed. Just like anything, people rather have more than not enough. It is not a good time when in the middle of winter, your outside making some more firewood. I remember the big concern with that is if the wood is going to burn right without properly drying. Heat is the essential element which comes from burning wood and if it is to wet, there will not be as much heat and will take much longer to burn. So when preparing firewood, a key note is to prepare in advance for needing it.

Time is of the essence with firewood. It is hard work, but in the long run when sitting next to the fireplace, it is all worth while. It is recommended that an individual prepares at least six months out of utilizing the wood. Reason being is to let the summer sun and wind dry the wood out. Obviously wood does not start to dry until it has been cut. Wood needs to be cut to fit the size of the fireplace or woodstove intended for use. It is all about receiving the most potential out of the chunk or piece of wood.
